Meadowdale Primary School

This week the children have been blending and segmenting with the sounds ‘x’ and ‘y’. We have also introduced the tricky word ‘me’. Next week we will look at the tricky word ‘be’ and look at where we might use the spellings ‘ll’, ‘ss’, ‘zz’ and ‘ff’ within words.
Thank you for your patience with reading books this week. The Christmas crafts day and pantomime visit meant that we needed to change books on different days. Next week we will change books on Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that all reading books are returned in bags on Thursday as we are hoping to have enough books to be able to send each child home with two books for the Christmas break.
It is lovely to see that so many children are relying far less on sound talking when reading. They are really enjoying thinking the sounds to read rather than saying the sounds to read. Please continue to work on this skill at home, as well as talking with your child about what they have read, to check their understanding.
We continue to have a big focus on letter formation. Over the next week, please support your child to revisit the formation of ‘c’, ‘o’, ‘a’, ‘d’ and ‘g’ and talk about how these letters start in the same way. Similarly, please work on the letters ‘h’, ‘m’ and ‘n’.
This week, we have thought about what a super sentence needs – a capital letter to start, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end. The children have worked together to read sentences that describe ‘megabeasts’ and then have written their own.
This week, the children have explored the number 9. Most are now secure with using counters to add practically and so our focus is now on using a number line to add. Please could you practice this skill at home also. For example, put your finger on 3 and jump on 4 to finish on 7 (3 + 4 = 7). Next week, the children will further consolidate this skill, whilst also looking at representations of number 10.
Thank you to those families that attended our Christmas crafts day on Tuesday, we had a lovely day. Please could you send a named bag into school next week for your child to bring their decorations home in.
Thank you to the families of the Butterflies groups for choosing a book for ‘Book and Tell’. Next week, it will be the Ladybirds group.
