Phonics

This week the children have learned to segment and blend with the spellings/graphemes ‘qu’ and ‘ai’ and learned the tricky word ‘you’. We have also talked to them about the words ‘give’ and ‘live’ as we know that these words will be coming up in their reading books.

Next week the children will be learning the spellings ‘ee’ and ‘igh’. They will be blending and segmenting words such as deep, seen, light and sight. We will also teach the tricky word ‘are’ and talk about the word ‘don’t’ as again this will soon be coming up in reading books.

We will continue our work on segmenting sounds in longer words, with a focus on CCVC words next week. We have again sent home an activity and this time the words are frog, plum, clap and step.

Please continue to support your child with letter formation at home. The letters a, d, g, p, h, m and n tend to be the ones that they find most tricky. To reach a ‘good level of development’ by the end of the school year, the children need to form letters correctly and so we want to break any bad habits as soon as possible.

Thank you for your ongoing support with reading and writing at home.

Maths

This week, the children have explored the number 14, used a number line to add and revisited the language used to describe 2D shapes through problem solving. We are confident that the children are now ready to move on to 3D shape learning and so we will start to talk about spheres, cylinders, cubes and cuboids over the next few weeks.

Please continue to support your child to recognise and order numbers to 20 as having this as an automatic skill will support all of their maths learning.

Activities

This week the children have completed a guided read, worked with their teacher to solve addition number problems and have started to explore melting and freezing. Next week the children will complete this experiment. They will also do a guided write and begin a study on the artist Paul Klee.

Other

STEM week has been great! We have heard from people who have careers in STEM and programming the Spheros was lots of fun.

Thank you for the junk modelling materials, please continue to send these in!

Thank you to the families of the Ladybirds groups for choosing a book for ‘Book and Tell’. Next week it will be the Bees group.
