Phonics
This week the children have been blending and segmenting with the sounds ‘e’ and ‘f’. We have also introduced the tricky word ‘no’. Tricky words (common exception words) are the words we have to learn by sight in Foundation Stage. We have now taught ‘I’, ‘the’, ‘go’, ‘to’ and ‘no’ so it would be great if you could practice reading and writing these at home to develop automaticity and fluency. Next week we will look at the tricky word ‘into’ and blend and segment with the sounds ‘v’ and ‘k’.
We are so proud of the children for trying so hard with their handwriting, it is looking fantastic! Please continue to practice letter formation at home. During our writing activities at school, the children are writing labels and captions and if their letter formation is automatic, it means that they can focus their attention on segmenting the sounds in words to write.
Literacy
This week, the children have explored the book ‘The Gruffalo.’ They have been storytellers, described the Gruffalo and read instructions for making a Gruffalo Crumble! We will be making and eating Gruffalo Crumble next week. The ingredients will be bananas, berries, digestive biscuits, sugar and butter. Please let us know if your child cannot eat this due to any dietary needs. Our literacy focus next week will be ‘Jungle Animals’, an information text.
Maths
This week, the children have found one more using manipulatives and by jumping on on a number line. We have also explored the concept of number 4. Next week we will explore number 5 and ordering numbers on a number line. To prepare your children for maths lessons leading up to Christmas, you could practice recognising and ordering numbers to 10 (and then to 20). Quick recognition and ordering of the numbers will help your child access concepts such as addition, subtraction, doubling and halving more easily.
Activities
This week the children completed a guided writing activity where they wrote about where they would hide from a Gruffalo. They said the sentence they wanted to write, listened for the sounds in the words and used finger spaces between words. Wow! They have also learned how to programme beebots and worked on their next steps in finding one more.
Other
Reading is a big school focus this year and is always a huge priority in Foundation Stage. We would like to start ‘Book and Tell’ next week. Each week we will ask a group of children to bring a favourite book into school on the Monday, which we will share with the class during the week. We will send these books home on the Friday. This will allow the children to share their excitement and love for special books and means that the whole class will be exposed to a huge variety of texts. The books can be fiction or non-fiction. We will start this with the butterflies group next week. If your child forgets which group they are in, please see their teacher. Please also label your child’s book with their name.
We look forward to seeing you all next week for Parents Evenings.
